Research Interests: Corporate governance, upper echelons, stakeholder management

 

Christy Shropshire is Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship in the W. P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University and incoming Director of the New Governance Lab, where she has served as a Fellow since 2022.  

 

Christy’s research examines corporate boards of directors and executives as individuals and teams, and their effects on strategic decision-making, governance, and performance. Her work explores the composition, processes, and dynamics of the upper echelons, including factors that shape director and executive engagement, influence, and effectiveness. Another stream of Christy’s research investigates how firms engage with and respond to shareholders and broader stakeholders. 

 

Her recent work delves into boardroom and organizational dynamics, including shareholder activism, governance networks, emotions and influence, and the interface between top management teams and boards of directors and how their interactions shape firm outcomes. Current projects draw on qualitative, machine-learning, and mixed-method approaches to better understand governance processes and strategic leadership. 

 

Her work has been published in leading journals including Academy of Management Journal, Academy of Management Review, Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, and Journal of Applied Psychology, and featured in outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, and NPR. She currently serves as an Associate Editor at the Academy of Management Review and on the Board of Directors for the International Corporate Governance Society (ICGS). Prior to academia, she worked in human capital consulting focused on executive compensation and governance issues.
